Description
This small oil on cardboard represents a man from behind, roped up, reaching the summit of the Grépon in the needles of Chamonix. The mountaineer is on a rock that seems to emerge above the clouds, in a higher, inaccessible universe. And it was at the cost of a last effort that he managed to reach it, Le Grépon, which culminates at 3482 meters above sea level, was climbed for the first time in 1881 by the Swiss guide Alexandre Burgener and the English mountaineer Albert Frederick Mummery, pioneer of self-guided mountaineering and sport climbing.
